Walgreens Open at the Las Vegas Strip

Now that the MLP season has concluded, it’s time to shift back into PPA mode, and this weekend it’s double-duty: PPA Las Vegas & PPA Tour Asia in Japan, where Tyler, CG, and Allyce are competing in all 3 events.

But first up is Vegas, where the carpet has been rolled out (sometimes not very well) at the Las Vegas Convention Center in a non-progressive draw. Yesterday, the singles brackets were completed, not without at least a little drama we’ve come to expect from pro pickle.

Storylines:

  • Skipping singles: Anna Leigh, Ben Johns, Parris Todd. Anna Leigh has voice concerns in the past about the risk of injury on roll-out courts, which could be why Ben is doing the same.

  • JW Johnson is missing this event altogether, so Jorja is playing mixed with boyfriend Jonathan Truong. They have the 4th seed and look to face giants Ben & Anna Leigh, Fed & Anna, Christian & Catherine, in a fight to finals.

  • Andrei & Christian return to seek total domination; with the 3-seed, they should coast to semis where they’ll have to get through Fed & Hayden to make finals. But, given how Fed has been performing lately, this might not be too difficult.

  • Singles finals are set. Championship Sunday will see John Lucian Goins face Hunter Johnson for gold in men’s, while Jaume and Jack Sock face off for bronze. In women’s, Kate Fahey and Kaitlyn Christian will battle for gold, with the bronze matchup between Layne Sleeth and Brooke Buckner.

  • Men’s singles has a new #1! With Fed dropping early (R32) in singles against Alex Crum, Fed has been unseated from the top spot in favor of Hunter Johnson.

  • Dallas Flash behemoths Jorja & Hurricane Tyra pair up in women’s doubles, looking to take down top seeds Parris & Catherine, and Anna B & Anna Leigh.

Sansan Fukuoka Open

The Fukuoka Open in Japan kicked off on Thursday at the Itoshima City Sports Park, and it's shaping up to be an exciting event! Tyler, Connor Garnett, and Allyce have all traveled there to compete in all three events. The tournament is a progressive draw, and we're eagerly anticipating the semi-finals, which are happening on Saturday in Japan. For those of us in the US, that means tuning in on Friday evening. Watch it on PPA Asia’s live stream on YouTube, linked below.

Fukuoka, Japan

Tyler was knocked out early in singles by Tama Shimabukuro, a 14-year-old sensation (and surfer) from Hawaii. CG took down Aryaan Bhatia, younger brother of India’s #1, Armaan Bhatia, in quarters, and will face Kenta Miyoshi in semis later tonight. Allyce lost in singles to Taiwan player Yu-chieh Hsieh.

In doubles, CG & Tyler will play tonight in the semis against Eunggwon Kim and Hong Kit Wong. Watch the replay of their battle over Thomas Yu and Len Wang in quarters. Allyce & Pei-chuan Kao, also play in semis tonight against Yufei Long and Ting Wei, who stunned San Clemente crowds in June by beating Jorja & Lacy Schneemann and Andrea Koop & Alix Truong. In mixed, Allyce & CG also play tonight against Eunggwon Kim & Ting Wen Wang
