Veolia Lakeland Open

The sun has risen on Beerman Family Tennis Center, where singles has kicked off for the 2025 Lakeland Open, the second-to-last event of the calendar year.

Beerman Family Tennis Center

The non-progressive draw has started with men’s and women’s singles today, mixed doubles Thursday, and gender doubles Friday. Here’s some storylines we’ll be watching.

Withdrawals: this morning it was announced several prominent names have withdrawn from singles.

  • Ben Johns

  • Jaume Martinez Vich

  • Christian Alshon

  • Max Freeman

  • DJ Young

  • Blaine Hovenier

New Partnerships:

  • Anna Bright is partnering for the first time with Eric Oncins. She’s had some good runs with several mixed partnerships, but none that have stuck long-term (perhaps by design). It’ll be interesting to see how they fare.

  • Steve Deakin is partnering with 12-year-old Elsie Hendershot, in what pickleball.com says is his last-ever pro tournament.

  • Jay Devilliers and Jackie Kawamoto are teaming up for the first time, and have the 17 seed. They sit in Ben & AL’s corner of the bracket, but we know a Kawamoto can take down a Waters, so this will be a fun one to watch.

Underdogs & Ones to Watch:

  • Elsie Hendershot has the #34 seed in women’s singles, facing Tammy Emmrich right out of the gate. If she succeeds, she’ll have to face Paris Todd in R32.

  • Not sure we can still call Genie Bouchard an underdog at #9 in singles, but her trajectory keeps going up as she challenges top singles women for a chance at a medal.

  • Tama Shimabukuro (44) had an early upsets over #32 Jemere Plummer; he has already advanced to R16 with Christian Alshon’s late scratch in R32.

  • Qualifier Harrison Gold nabbed Jaume’s #5 spot with his withdrawal, and has already toppled Ryan Sherry in three games, and will face #11 Roscoe Bellamy in R16 next.
