The CIBC Atlanta Slam is underway, with qualifiers yesterday, and round of 64 today. Atlanta is always a favorite among the pros, with Lifetime Peachtree Corners playing host, and as a “Slam” event, 2,000 points are on the line for winners.
Here are the storylines we’re watching:
Close Call Replay is here! Perhaps the most highly anticipated advancement of the league, the enhanced replay system is debuting in Atlanta. See below for more details about how this will be implemented, and the rules surrounding its use, but we’re sure this will be a game-changer! (But if the rain moves play indoors, CCR cannot be moved and it’s either no challenges/replays, or back to standard camera systems).
Christian Alshon withdraws from singles. Late-breaking news is CA was a late scratch, and “lucky loser” Mickulas Ray takes his spot and the #5 seed. Meanwhile, qualifier winner Anouar Braham got the #56 seed and has to take on Jay Devilliers. Lucky, indeed.
It’s not worth wasting many pixels to talk women’s dubs, since it’ll probably end as it always does. We’re excited to see Parris and Lea pair up; they might not have too tough a path to QF, but after that it gets tight with AB & Rachel in the hunt for gold. Underdogs to watch (if we can call them that?): Brooke Buckner and Zoey Wang who have both been playing spectacular pickleball over the last several events. Can they challenge some of the mainstays?
Obviously we’re looking for Tyler & CG to ride their high from Vegas and finally make it to the medal stand! If they win their first round, we’ll get a Vegas bronze-medal-matchup rematch in R16 when they take on Riley & Alshon.
It’s a HUGE field in mixed, with 64 teams facing off. There’s so many good matchups, we are rooting for a couple good upsets. James & AB are back together (on court), keeping things profesh to (hopefully) harness their #2 seed for a championship. Can they beat Johns-Waters, though?
The weather will prove to be a factor this weekend, as Tropical Storm Francine moves through Louisiana and dumps rain on Atlanta.
