Kicking off Tuesday is the Las Vegas Pickleball Cup. The “Cup” event indicates this is a progressive draw, so all events will have their round of 64 today (after yesterday’s qualifiers for men’s, men’s doubles, and mixed).
Here are the storylines we’re watching:
Ben Johns is back, among other top players who also missed SLC. Playing indoors is not Ben’s favorite, and early video from the venue is not looking promising for court conditions and lighting. How is he going to fare?
Anna Bright & Tina Pisnik make their debut, and will be an interesting watch. Anna’s aggressive style of play paired with Tina’s can’t-miss right-side play might be the combination needed to beat the nearly undefeated ALW-CP.
James Ignatowich plays with his unsigned buddy from Vanderbilt, Max Freeman. Will Max prove to be good in his own right, or is he just riding James’ coattails through the draw? (Note: although Max is unsigned, James is a Top 10-ranked men’s doubles players, so he is able to get into the main draw automatically. Their 12th seed is determined by their average points.)
Christian Alshon and Anna Bright are making another run for a medal after falling to Ben & ALW in Bristol. They’ll have a similar opportunity on the opposite side of the bracket in the #2 spot, but they might have to beat ex James (yes, we said it) and Viv Glozman to get there.
The field is small in Women’s singles, and there weren’t enough players to warrant a qualifier. Kate Fahey will be back to defend her title after being the lowest-seeded women’s single player in PPA history to win a gold. But Anna Leigh and Catherine are back, so a repeat isn’t likely.
Check out this still from a spectator video of the courts in Las Vegas shows a number of ripples across the floor. Let’s hope this gets …smoothed out soon.
